A Year On, the Prince of Wales Pier Restoration Proves a Success

Trustees confirm the Prince of Wales Pier stands strong a year after restoration, surviving winter storms and already supporting marine life

Just over a year after construction works were completed to restore The Prince of Wales Pier, Trustees met this week with the main contractor and engineering consultants to inspect The Prince of Wales Pier during the brief window of low spring tides.

The inspection brought encouraging news. Having been thoroughly tested by a series of winter storms, the pier remains in very good condition. Only minor snagging works remain, which the contractor will now complete before the final retention payment is released in accordance with the contract.

It was also noted that the project has had minimal environmental impact. The pier walls are already supporting marine life, with molluscs and algae now covering the structure.

The Engineering Consultants also commented that due to the severity of this winter’s storms it was highly likely that the old pier would have failed, so it was good to get the work done when we did.

Attention now turns to the main quay, where early signs of decay have been identified. Trustees plan to carry out preventative maintenance works through the coming months.
